The Harold Allen Study Collection
The Harold Allen Study Collection (HASC), formally accepted as a special collection of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in spring 2004, contains a selection of artistic, intellectual, and historical materials reflecting the extensive and varied career of Harold Allen (1912-1998), an outstanding and influential artist and teacher, and the Frederick Latimer Wells Professor Emeritus in the Department of Photography. Materials in the HASC include an extensive collection of Allen’s photographs including his study of the historic architecture and landscape of Nauvoo, Illinois; Father Ravalli’s Missions, a project for the first class ever taught in the history of photography at SAIC (by Hugh Edwards, AIC curator of Photography), and later published as a book by the Art Institute of Chicago; montage photographs combining architectural subjects and other images; photographic studies created for teaching lighting concepts; self-portrait photographs, research and documentary materials, teaching materials created by Allen, examples of fine and decorative art collected by Allen, personal, professional, and business correspondence and other writings, books, and miscellany.
The Harold Allen online collection features nearly 400 of Harold Allen’s black and white gelatin silver print photographs, primarily of architecture, places, memorial sculpture, Egyptomania, and other subjects that Allen explored, and photographed with passion and attention to his subjects’ essential formal and conceptual qualities. Titles are Harold Allen’s, and dates within the title refer to the date or circa of the building or object photographed. (Note: this online collection represents a range of Allen’s work throughout his career; the prints of many but not all images are in the HASC.)
For more images of Harold Allen's Photography elsewhere online visit the Ryerson & Burnham Archives Archival Image Collection and for a larger collection of his Egyptomania visit the Ryerson & Burnham Archives Finding Aid Collection.
