About This Collection
The Correspondence Art digital library draws from several collections housed in the Flaxman Library Special Collections.
The Artists' Postage Stamp Collection contains hundreds of examples of "Artistamps" from around the world. Among them are works by key individuals from the network of Mail Artists including Anna Banana, Vittore Baroni, John Held Jr., Carlo Pittore, Ryosuke Cohen, and Chuck Welch. This Collection reflects a range of approaches to the form, from individual stamps that passed undetected through the postal service, to stamps used to adorn envelopes and postcards, and full sheets of unsent perforated stamps.
The Mail Art Collection includes correspondence art from all over the world. Parts of this collection, which also includes exhibition catalogues and reference books, were donated by long-time American mail artist, Dorothy Patrick Harris (a.k.a. Arto Posto).
The Jean Toche Mailings Collection exemplifies the mass mailings by Belgian art activist Jean Toche. Born in 1932, Toche immigrated to the US at the age of 33 and has been continuously active in New York to the present day. Political mail art is an important part of this artist’s output and is still being sent directly to targeted individuals.
