PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:Typescript papers, holograph papers, printed papers, black and white photographic prints, color photographic prints, audiocassettes, and architectural drawings.
ORIGINATION: Dart, Edward, 1922-1975
Dart, Susan, 1920-
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The collection was a gift from Susan Dart McCutcheon to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in 1996. Additional items were added to the collection in 2011.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Edward D. Dart was born Edouard Dupaquier Dart in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1922. He attended the Isadore Newman School in New Orleans and the Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. After two years at the University of Virginia, he enlisted in the Marines, beginning aviation training in June 1942, and later flying bombers in the Pacific during World War II.

Following his release from the military, Dart married Wilma Plansoen, and studied architecture at Yale University. Upon completion of his B.A. in Architecture in 1949, he moved to Chicago and eventually started his own firm. Dart designed his own home, as well as many other residences and several religious buildings throughout the Chicago area. In 1965, Dart consolidated his practice with that of Loebl Schlossman and Bennett, where he assumed the role of principal-in-charge of design. It was during this time that Dart designed Water Tower Place on Michigan Avenue. In 1975, while the building was still under construction, Dart died of a stroke.

Among Dart's noted designs are the Chicago Theological Seminary faculty housing in Chicago; Saint Procopius Abbey in Lisle, Illinois; Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Chicago; and the Pick-Staiger Concert Hall at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
This collection contains material in the form of notes, records, photocopy, publications, correspondence, and photographs collected by Susan Dart while researching and writing Edward D. Dart, Architect (Evanston Publishing, 1993). This collection can be separated into roughly three groups: those documenting Dart's personal life (Series I and Series VI), those documenting his professional career (Series II and Series III), and those of more peripheral interest (Series IV and Series V). Series I is composed primarily of historical and genealogical records of the extended Dart Family. Aspects of Dart's personal life, including his early years of school, military experience, and his death, are also documented in this series. The final series, Series VI, is comprised of cassettes containing interviews of Henry P. Dart III about his brother Edward D. Dart. Though not comprehensive by any means, Series II, Architectural Papers, contains writings, correspondence, printed matter, and architectural drawings relating to many of Dart's projects, both before and after the establishment of Loebl, Schlossman, Bennett, and Dart. Series II also collects writings and printed matter that document Dart's architectural philosophy and the intellectual processes behind his creations. Series III consists of correspondence and printed matter documenting awards, citations, and honorary professional appointments that Dart received throughout his career. Series IV collects remaining printed materials such as Newspaper articles and magazine tearsheets. Most of these items document brief appearances of Dart's name in many Chicago area newspapers throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Series V contains materials produced directly as a result of the writing and publication of Susan Dart's biography of her brother, Edward Dart, Architect. This series includes correspondence related to permissions and publication acknowledgements, as well as book reviews, promotional items and research notebooks.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
SERIES I: PERSONAL PAPERS. Papers are organized into three subseries: Family and Friends, Education, and Military Service. Materials within each of these categories are further arranged either alphabetically (Family and Friends, Education) or by subject (Military Service).

SERIES II: ARCHITECTURAL PAPERS. Papers are organized into three subseries: General Papers, Architectural Philosophy, and People and Projects. The Architectural Philosophy materials are further arranged chronologically, while the People and Projects papers are arranged alphabetically.

SERIES III: AWARDS AND CITATIONS. Papers are organized into Correspondence and Printed Matter.

SERIES IV: PRINTED MATERIALS. Papers are organized into Works Related to Edward D. Dart and Unrelated Works.

SERIES V: EDWARD D. DART BIOGRAPHY. Papers are organized into three subseries: Correspondence, Printed Matter, and Research Notebooks.

SERIES VI: AUDIOTAPES.
