PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Holograph papers, typescript papers, printed papers, black and white photographic prints, color photographic prints, color slides and black and white negatives.
ORIGINATION: Harrison, Sharon R., d.1988
Morse, Peter, b.1935
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The collection was a gift from Theodore Harrison to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in 1997.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Sharon R. (née Rich) Harrison received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. She later taught art history at Eastern Michigan University. Her book, The Etchings of Odilon Redon: A Catalogue Raisonné, was published in 1986 and was intended to be the first of a three-volume series on the prints of French symbolist artist Odilon Redon. However, Harrison died in August, 1988, before the project was completed.

Peter Morse was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1935. In 1969, Morse published his first work, a catalogue raisonné of British artist John Sloan's prints. Further monographs on the prints of Hokusai, Rembrandt, Antoni Waterloo, and Jean Charlot followed. Morse began a regular correspondence with Harrison in 1969 and also authored the introduction to Harrison's Redon catalogue. At Harrison's request, Morse took custody of Harrison's research material shortly before her death, in the hope that Morse would carry on the work. Unfortunately, Morse died shortly thereafter.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The collection is comprised of the correspondence and research materials for Sharon Harrison's catalogue raisonné of Odilon Redon's etchings, as well as preliminary research for a planned catalogue of Redon's lithographs. Series I, Correspondence, consists of questions and answers to Harrison's Redon research questions, information on Redon collections, extended correspondence between Harrison and Morse and between Harrison and Da Capo Press, photographic rights and reproduction issues, and copies of Redon's correspondence. Series II, Research Material, consists of holograph notes and printed matter such as newspaper and magazine articles; both subseries contain information collected regarding specific Redon works, as well as other more general topics. Series III, Printed Matter, is also research material, primarily consisting of gallery and auction sales catalogues and exhibition brochures. Also included is a Gifu Museum catalogue, an issue of Print Collector, and non-Redon related publications such as an exhibition program, a collection catalogue, and a periodical. Series IV, Book Production, contains manuscript and office files relating to the creation and publication of Sharon Harrison's The Etchings of Odilon Redon. It includes various drafts, some with corrections; editorial suggestions and corrections, photography orders, reproduction rights and methods, copyright certificate, notes, reviews, advertisements and mailing lists. Series V, Photographs, is composed of black and white and color prints of Redon's work--primarily prints, but also some paintings and drawings--as well as photographs of Redon, street views, and etchings by Rodolphe Bresdin. Series VI, Negatives, is restricted. Most items in this series are 8" x 10" negatives of Redon etchings. There are also some smaller negatives and diapositives of Redon's etchings and lithographs. Prints do not exist for all negatives. Series VII, Miscellany, consists of business cards; teaching related materials; tourist information for Paris; and NEH Grant application material relating to a collaborative project with Roger S. Keyes entitled Hokusai's Print: A Catalogue Raisonné.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
SERIES I: CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence is divided into five subseries: general correspondence, Redon inquiry response letters from institutions that have Redon holdings, Redon inquiry response letters from institutions that do not have any Redon materials, address lists used by Harrison to contact these cultural institutions, and photocopies of correspondence to and from Odilon and Cam Redon. In some cases, inquiry response letters that give more detailed information may be located in the general correspondence. Except in cases where it is clear that Harrison had an extended and personal correspondence with a specific individual, or when correspondence does not pertain to the individual's role in the institution (i.e. when they write as fellow scholars), correspondence is listed alphabetically by institution rather than the initiating correspondent. For correspondence from art museums and galleries affiliated with universities, the educational institution name is listed first. All subseries are arranged alphabetically, with the exception of the Odilon and Cam Redon correspondence, which is arranged according to the provenance of the original letters.

SERIES II: RESEARCH MATERIAL. Research material is arranged into art research, and biographical and general research subseries. Materials within the art research subseries are sorted further into genre groups (i.e. etchings, lithographs) and then alphabetically. Biographical and general research papers are organized chronologically thereafter.

SERIES III: PRINTED MATTER. Printed matter is grouped into three subseries: articles, catalogues, and miscellany. Within each group, organization is chronological.

SERIES IV: BOOK PRODUCTION. Contains manuscript and book product subseries. The book product subseries includes publicity, book reviews, and other papers relating to the publication of the Redon catalogue on DaCapo Press. Arrangement within each section is chronological.

SERIES V: PHOTOGRAPHS. Photographs are arranged into art research, and biographical and general research subseries. Materials within the art research subseries are sorted further into genre groups (i.e. etchings, lithographs) and then alphabetically. Biographical and general research papers are organized chronologically.

SERIES VI: NEGATIVES. Negatives are sorted according to which did and did not appear in the published catalogue. Within these groups, organization is alphabetical.

SERIES VII: MISCELLANY. Includes one group of materials related to an NEH grant application and a small subseries of other miscellany including an award and several business cards.
