HISTORICAL NOTE:
McCormick Place on the Lake (1971) was built on the site of the first McCormick Place (1960), which was destroyed by a fire in 1967. Designed by architect Gene Summers for C. F. Murphy Associates, the lakefront convention center consisted of two buildings - an exhibition space and a theater - under one roof, separated by an open plaza. The influence of Summers's mentor Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is evident, the design being particularly reminiscent of Mies's National Gallery (1968) in Berlin, a project for which Summers served as supervising architect.

There have been multiple additions to the convention center in recent years, resulting in name changes for the original building. McCormick Place on the Lake was renamed McCormick Place East, and later renamed Lakeside Center, the name by which it is known today.
