The sculptures span almost the full length of Milles's career and represent his work across the United States and in Sweden.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:Black and white photographic prints.
ORIGINATION: Rogers, Meyric R. (Meyric Reynold), 1893-
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The collection was a gift from Meyric R. Rogers's daughter, Elizabeth Rogers, to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in 1963.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Carl Milles was born Carl Emil Wilhelm Anderson in Lagga, Upsala, Sweden, on June 23, 1875. Following his early formal education with a tutor at home and at the Jacobs School in Stockholm, Milles was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker at the age of seventeen. Near the shop where he worked was the studio of sculptor Borjeson, who inspired Milles to begin taking classes at the Technical School in Stockholm. With his success, Milles began taking full-time classes and was awarded first prize for his work with the Swedish Arts and Crafts Society. In 1897 Milles left for Paris, where he remained until 1904 attending the Académie Colarossi and other schools. His first work was admitted to the Salon in 1899 and during this time he was influenced by Impressionism and particularly by Auguste Rodin's sculptures. Following his residence in Munich from 1904 to 1906, Milles returned to Sweden in 1908 and during the 1910s worked at his home in Lidingö, near Stockholm, where his sculpture underwent a major stylistic change. Milles was appointed Professor of Modeling at the Royal Academy of Art, Stockholm, in 1920 and taught there until his departure for the United States in 1931. From 1931 to 1945 Milles was the Professor of Sculpture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The late 1930s were a time of recognition for Milles: he was awarded gold medal by the American Institute of Architects and the Architectural League in New York in 1938, and he was elected an honorary member of the Royal Academy, London, in 1940. In 1945, Milles became an American citizen, although he returned to Sweden late in life and died at his home in Lidingö on September 19, 1955.
