HISTORICAL NOTE:
The Old Northwest Territory Art Exhibit was held in the Fine Arts Gallery, Exposition Hall, at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. Open to professional artists in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin, it began as a juried exhibition (1947-1949) and later became an invitational show (1950-1951), with cash prizes awarded every year. Originally including oil painting, watercolors, prints, sculpture, and ceramics, by the second year exhibition organizers limited entries to oil painting, watercolors, and prints, though in 1950 drawings were included as well. Jurors--Max Weber among them--were selected from around the country and from different areas of the arts: practicing artists, critics, teachers, curators, architects, and art historians. Of the hundreds of works shown during these years, the Illinois State Museum acquired almost twenty for its permanent collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The Old Northwest Territory Art Exhibit collection includes publicity materials from 1947 to 1951, during Lester Burbank Bridaham's tenure as Assistant Director and Public Relations Counsel for the exhibit. Assembled by Bridaham, the scrapbook contains press releases, numerous newspaper clippings, magazine articles, announcements of the competitions and instructions for entering, programs for events, and exhibit catalogs. Newspaper clippings are from all states whose residents were eligible to participate in the exhibition, though the largest concentration is from Illinois. Magazine articles are from Quick, Time, Art News, and The Art Digest. All materials are organized by the year of the exhibition, though there is little for the 5th exhibition in 1951.
