HISTORICAL NOTE:
In the late 1950s Congress established a Franklin Delano Roosevelt memorial commission, which organized an open design competition for a site in West Potomac Park, Washington, D.C. The 1959 design competition was won by Pederson and Tilney; however, the design did not receive approval from the Federal Commission of Fine Arts. In 1966 the memorial commission selected Marcel Breuer to design the memorial; again, the Federal Commission of Fine Arts vetoed the design. In the late 1970s the landscape design of Lawrence Halprin was approved and completed in 1997.
