ABSTRACT:This collection of papers created by Chicago fine art appraiser and authenticator Benjamin K. Smith includes appraisals and related correspondence, organized by client name.

ACQUISITION INFORMATION:Barton Keith Smith donated the business papers of his father, Benjamin K. Smith, to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in 1990.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
As a young man, Benjamin K. Smith (1872-1973) worked for several manufacturers of upholstery, furniture and undertakers' supplies in Wisconsin and Illinois. Continuing in sales, he worked for W.K. Cowan and Co., Chicago dealers in antiques and furniture restorers. Leaving Cowan in 1907 he first worked for Henry Rinehardt, an art dealer, and subsequently for Spaulding and Co., dealers in silver, china and glassware. In 1924 Smith established his own appraisal business in Chicago, providing appraisal and authentication services to many of Chicago's society families.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The bulk of the collection consists of appraisals and related correspondence, including many appraisals for prominent Chicago families. Personal correspondence, memorabilia and miscellaneous publications complete the collection.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
SERIES I: APPRAISALS AND CORRESPONDENCE. Documents are arranged by client name and thereafter by subject type and chronological date, with undated items listed at the end of each entry.

SERIES II: MISCELLANEOUS PERSONAL NOTES AND DOCUMENTS. Documents are separated by material, with unpublished documents followed by published documents. Items are arranged by chronological date, with undated items listed at the end.
