BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Harry Mintz was born in Ostrowiec, Poland in 1907. In 1927, he received his MFA from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. After a fellowship in Brazil, Mintz relocated to the United States and studied at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. He was a visiting professor at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, from 1954-1955, and a professor of painting at the School of the Art Institute from 1956-1969. Mintz also taught at many Chicago area arts institutions, including the Evanston Art Center and the North Shore Art League.

Mintz was a registered Illinois artist for the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project during the 1930s. Widely exhibited in local, national and international group and individual shows, he received over 40 awards for his work. His artwork, realistic in the beginning, grew more and more abstract as his career progressed, reflecting the uncertainties of life between two world wars. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museu e Arte Moderne in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in Tel Aviv, Israel. He was a member of the Renaissance Society and the Chicago Society of Artists.

Harry Mintz was also very active in the Chicago area Jewish community. Having lost his father, mother, sisters and other relatives in the World War II Holocaust, he actively sought out surviving members of his extended family during the post-war years, advertising in European newspapers and perusing thousands of telephone book pages. In 1987, he gathered the surviving members of the Mintz family for a reunion in Chicago.

Harry Mintz died in Chicago in 2002.
