ABSTRACT:This collection of photographs taken by Ralph Marlowe Line documents buildings and architectural ornament designed by Chicago architect Louis Sullivan.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Black and white photographic prints.
ORIGINATION: Line, Ralph Marlowe
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The Ryerson and Burnham Archives purchased this collection from Winter Wheat Antiques, St. Joseph, Illinois, in Spring 2000.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Ralph Marlowe Line (1904-1989) was an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. His interest in Louis Sullivan is apparent not only in this collection of photographs but also in published work. One example is a reprint of Louis Sullivan's The Autobiography of an Idea (New York: Dover Publications, Inc., 1956), which includes the original text by Sullivan, has a new introduction by Line, and thirty-five images by Line selected especially for the edition. Excerpts of his introduction were also printed with photographs from a comprehensive project of documenting the architecture of Sullivan that was conducted at the Institute of Design in Chicago under Aaron Siskind, as published in Craft Horizons (22: May-June 1962, pp. 18-21).

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The Line Collection includes photographs of buildings and their ornament designed by Louis Sullivan throughout his career. Most of the images are of buildings in the Midwest, particularly Chicago, though there are representatives from throughout the United States.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
Photographs are arranged alphabetically by building name; buildings with multiple common names have been cross-referenced. There are two folders of unidentified buildings and ornament and one folder of work by other architects at the end of the series.
