ABSTRACT:Amateur artist and bibliophile, Paul Theobald opened a bookstore and gallery in Chicago in 1936 that attracted the large émigré population in Chicago. Theobald soon became a publisher of books that related the visual arts to social issues. Among the authors published were Walter Gropius, Gyorgy Kepes, Kazimir Malevich, László Moholy-Nagy and Ludwig Hilberseimer. This collection includes correspondence with authors, manuscripts, contracts, and reviews.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Correspondence, printed papers, black and white photographic prints, a linocut and a bound book.
ORIGINATION: Paul Theobald Company
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The State of Illinois and the Estate of Mrs. Paul (Lolita) Theobald donated most of this collection to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in June, 1992.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Paul Theobald (1900-1955) was born in Cologne, Germany, and immigrated to Chicago with his parents in 1914. He studied at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago both before and after his time in the army during World War I. In 1922, Theobald began working at Kroch's Bookstore, where continued his interest in art. At Kroch's Theobald developed an art department that became known throughout the country.

After this strong beginning in the book world, Theobald and his wife, Lolita (Lola), opened their own Chicago bookstore in 1936, ten years after they married. Through the art exhibits held at the shop, Theobald began to meet émigrés who had come from the German Bauhaus to teach at Chicago schools such as the Institute of Design and Illinois Institute of Technology. Although his first publishing endeavor in 1941 was with Mexican Costume, Theobald's second and third books (1944) involved members of this former Bauhaus group and were marked by the way they related visual art to the social environment. Also in 1944, Paul Theobald and Company put out its first catalog and Theobald and László Moholy-Nagy began planning a continuation of the ambitious series of Bauhaus books that was disrupted by World War II. Two of these were published, but with Moholy's death in 1946, the new series came to an end. The books Theobald published after 1946 were mainly related to design and reflected American trends of thinking, rather than a continuation of European modernist ideas.

After Theobald's death in 1955, Lolita continued to develop new titles for the company and to manage the bookstore. Although the list of books published and distributed by Paul Theobald and Company is short—fewer than twenty titles—the mutual respect between publisher and authors provided a freedom for both and produced a number of the most important design publications of the post-World War II era. These books document not only issues of design, but also the extension and influence of European modernism in the United States.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The Paul Theobald and Company Records consist of authors' correspondence and documents regarding Theobald publications, general office records, and copies of published books. The authors, editors, and contributors to Theobald's publications include influential twentieth century architects, artists, and designers such as László Moholy-Nagy, Gyorgy Kepes, Ludwig Hilberseimer, Walter Gropius, and Kasimir Malevich. Series I, Authors' Correspondence and Documents, contains papers relating to both unrealized projects and published works. The breadth of documentation varies widely between projects; editorial and production correspondence, production specifications, invoices, and material relating to foreign rights are extant for most works, while manuscripts, promotional matter, legal correspondence, and financial documents exist for only some. All papers in this series have been categorized according to the following six types or functions: Correspondence, Manuscripts, Production, Promotion, Legal and Financial, and Foreign Editions. The Correspondence subseries in Series I consist of editorial correspondence between publisher and author or editor as well as some legal correspondence. These documents are for the most part very professional in nature, though the personal character of relationships established with László Moholy-Nagy and Gyorgy Kepes is resonant in their particular exchanges. Also of note are several contentious and protracted legal disputes between the Kepes's and the Theobalds. Manuscripts subseries may contain typescript notes, drafts of introductory matter such as prefaces and abstracts, or related works such as a speech. Production subseries may consist of production correspondence, specifications (book size, type face, etc.), invoices, cover mock ups, and illustrative material to be included in the final book. The production material for Kepes's Language of Vision is notable for the original Jean Hélion linocut, and Hélion and Berenice Abbott autograph letters. Promotion subseries include correspondence, printed matter such as book reviews and press releases, and invoices. Legal and Financial subseries are comprised of contracts, copyright registration certificates, royalty statements, and related correspondence. Notable items in these subseries include legal correspondence regarding the disposition of copyrights and authors' literary estates. The final group of subseries, Foreign Editions, consists of correspondence and contracts with foreign agents and publishing houses. Series II, Miscellaneous Office Records, includes invoices, contracts, correspondence, working texts, receipts, and other general papers relating to general press operations. Series III, Published Books, includes a selection of books published by Theobald as well as one item published by another press.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
SERIES I: AUTHORS' CORRESPONDENCE AND DOCUMENTS. Arranged alphabetically by author's last name, alphabetically by book title, then by document type and finally, chronologically. The document type categories used in this series are: Correspondence, Manuscripts, Production, Promotion, Legal and Financial, and Foreign Editions. Documents relating to multiple books are arranged at the subseries' end under the heading of "Various Publications."

SERIES II: MISCELLANEOUS OFFICE RECORDS. Arranged in four subseries: Financial Records, General Correspondence, Promotional Matter, and Legal Documents. Further arrangement is either alphabetical by company name (Financial Records) or chronologically.
