ABSTRACT:The Hurter Family collection includes photographs, architectural drawings, documents and business papers that represent typical single-family and multi-family urban housing of turn-of-the-century Chicago.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:Correspondence, printed papers, manuscripts, architectural reprographic prints, color photographic prints and black and white photographic prints.
ORIGINATION: Documents pertaining to 6316 North Magnolia Ave. Chicago, Illinois, were compiled by Louis P. Hurter, Sr., during the construction of the house between 1894 and 1895. Documents pertaining to the two apartments at 6435 North Leavitt and 6434 North Claremont in Chicago were gathered by Louis P. Hurter, Jr., after the completion of the two buildings. The photographs, real estate information and notes for 6316 North Magnolia Ave. Chicago, dating from 1999, were collected by Florence Hurter.
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:This collection was donated by Louann Hurter Van Zelst, daughter of Louis P. Hurter Jr., and her husband Theodore W. Van Zelst to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in 2001 and 2007.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Louis P. Hurter, Sr., owned a millwork business in Chicago between 1890 and 1910. He hired Chicago architect Ernest Mayo in 1895 to design his family's home at 6316 North Magnolia Ave in the upper middle class neighborhood of Edgewater in Chicago. Much of the elaborate woodwork inside the home came from the family's millwork company. His son, Louis P. Hurter, Jr. (1892-1981), worked for forty-five years at the Theodore F. Kartheiser & Son Millwork Company in Chicago. He used the estimator's cost manual between the years 1915 and 1917 to estimate the cost of materials from the millwork for customers. In 1921 he hired the Chicago architect Arthur Jacobs to design a two-flat apartment building for his wife and himself at 6435 North Leavitt St. in the Chicago neighborhood of Rogers Park. At the same time he also had Jacobs design a mirror-image two-flat apartment building for his mother located four blocks away at 6434 North Claremont Ave.
