ABSTRACT:The work of Chicago architect Knight Cheney Cowles is represented in this collection by photographs of several of his buildings.

ACQUISITION INFORMATION:This album was a gift from Knight Cheney Cowles to the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Knight Cheney Cowles, born in 1892, received a B.A. from Yale University in 1916, an M.Arch. from Harvard Univesity in 1922, and an Architecte Diplômès par le Gouvernement from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, in 1925. He worked as a designer for the Chicago architecture firm of Holabird and Root from 1925 to 1928 and was later a partner in the firm of Cowles and Colean, Architects. He was a member of the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Cowles died in May 1970.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The collection includes nineteen mounted black and white photographs from six different projects. These projects include the Lagerlof restaurant located in Chicago, Illinois (1929); the Morris Belknap residence in Louisville, Kentucky (1929); the Arthur D. Allen residence in Glenview, Kentucky (1929); the Farley Hopkins residence in Lake Forest, Illinois (1930); the Thomas and Hochwalt Laboratories in Dayton, Ohio (1930); and the Bowen residence in Lake Forest, Illinois (1931).

The photographs are arranged in the order in which they were bound in the portfolio.
