BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Frances Burdette Holgate (1902-1979) was born in Evanston, IL where she resided for her entire life. She was the fourth child of Thomas Franklin Holgate, an active Northwestern University administrator. A case of tuberculosis in her childhood left her with a reduced lung capacity and she was required to take periods of rest throughout her life. During one such rest period she began building architectural models, which quickly changed from a hobby to the business that would employ her for the rest of her life. She also founded Holgate & Reynolds with Hal Reynolds, the owner of a hobby shop in Evanston, to supply model railroad enthusiasts with building supplies.
