ABSTRACT:Business records and correspondence relating to the activities of the Chicago Architectural Exhibition League.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:Manuscripts, printed papers, black and white photographic prints and color photographic prints.
ORIGINATION: Chicago Architectural Exhibition League
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The majority of this collection was donated by Wilbert Hasbrouck in 1982. The materials related to the Lohan Associates' 1990s exhibition were donated sometime prior to 2014.

HISTORICAL NOTE:
The first entry in the notebook of minutes is the Articles of Incorporation of Chicago Architectural Exhibition League, in the State of Illinois, dated January 16, 1924. The league's objectives were:

"to give and conduct an annual architectural exhibition in the City of Chicago; to finance and superintend an architectural library; to foster architectural scholarship competitions; to own and operate a building as headquarters for architects, structural engineers and others engaged in the business of building and to conduct similar enterprises solely for the advancement of the profession of architecture."

The Board of Directors would be composed of three members from each of three organizations: the Illinois Society of Architects, the Chicago Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Chicago Architectural (Sketch) Club.

The exhibitions, initially held at The Art Institute of Chicago and later at the Arts Club, appear to be the only activity among all those objectives listed which the League brought to realization. The first exhibition was held in 1924 at the Art Institute and featured the twenty drawings by Louis Sullivan "A system of architectural ornament" which were executed for the Burnham Library. This first exhibition was termed the thirty-seventh, as the League continued the numbering sequence first established by the Chicago Architectural (Sketch) Club.

The 1926 exhibition, also held at the Art Institute, featured drawings, plans, photographs and models from several sources: Howard van Doren Shaw exhibited the Goodman Theatre; the Armour Institute of Technology offered several exhibits as did Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The League sponsored a competition for the design of a Civic Center for Chicago, of which the three winners received $1,000 travelling scholarships.

The last exhibition by the original form of the club was held at the 1934 World's Fair in Chicago. The economic and political problems of the times postponed future exhibitions. Having been inactive for nearly 20 years, the League voted to dissolve in 1953, turning over the $1,600 in its treasury to the Burnham Library to further its microfilming project.

Following a major architectural retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in 1976, a group of Chicago architects including Stanley Tigerman reconstituted the Chicago Architectural Exhibition League as the Chicago Architectural Club. It continues to exhibit, though its focus now is on emerging architects.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The notebook containing the minutes of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Architectural Exhibition League also includes the Articles of Incorporation in the State of Illinois January 16, 1924, and some miscellaneous correspondence concerning proxy representation at board meetings. The first meeting was held on February 14, 1924, and meetings were held annually for several years thereafter. The schedule was then changed to a quarterly meeting. The last recorded minutes are for the meeting June 9, 1953. The minutes record board members present, frequently include a treasurer's report, and a discussion of the lack of a quorum. There is no discussion of the theme or material in the exhibitions. The materials from the reconstituted form of the League are from an exhibition focusing on the firm Lohan Associates.
