Burnham and Company in the 1890s and continuing with the establishment of his own firm in 1900, which he maintained until his death in 1923.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:Architectural drawings, printed papers, typescript papers, photocopies and black and white photographic prints.
ORIGINATION: Hyland, Paul V., 1876-1966.
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The collection was a gift from the Augustus Edwin Hyland Trust and Dr. John T. Hyland, to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in 2011.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Paul Vincent Hyland was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 12, 1876 and was educated at West Division High School and Niagara University in Niagara County, New York. He also lived in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and California. Hyland began his career practicing architecture in 1895, when he began working as a draftsman and superintendent for various architectural firms, such as Holabird & Roche, D.H. Burnham and Co., Benjamin H. Marshall, Mundie and Jensen, and Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge. From March 1918 to April 1919, Hyland was commissioned as Major in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, and was stationed with the War Department in Washington, D.C. After the army, he returned to work as a architect and engineer in Chicago where, from 1919 to 1931, with partner Redmond Prindiville Corse (1888-1971), the firm Hyland & Corse designed a variety of structures, including banks, offices, schools, and factories. Hyland closed the office in April 1931, but returned to the field in 1933, working for various firms in and around Chicago until 1942. He also held many positions in related fields, such as estimating engineer for the Federal Civil Works Administrations, architect and appraiser of buildings for Ward T. Huston & Co., engineer inspector for Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works, and specification and estimating engineer for Sanderson & Porter. Hyland married Lillian Mahler in August 1898. In 1952 he moved to Los Angeles, California and died in June 1966.
