HISTORICAL NOTE:
Robert August Furhoff, born 1939, has been an historic preservationist, historic site inspector, and paint analysis expert since the 1970s. He attended Kendall School of Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Furhoff's early professional career in Chicago included working as a space planner on Governors State University and as an interior designer for Norman DeHaan. During the course of his career, Furhoff became nationally recognized as an award-winning expert in historic interiors and paint analysis. Furhoff began working as a preservationist in 1975. In 1977, Furhoff started his Chicago based business, Restoration Interiors, and restored historic sites throughout the Midwest until his retirement in 2009.

Furhoff specialized in reconstructing historic sites to their original states. Over the course of these 34 years, he restored many notable historic sites, primarily in Illinois and Wisconsin. Two restoration projects of note included in this collection are Unity Temple by Frank Lloyd Wright and the Chicago Cultural Center by Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge. He was also hired by John Vinci to work on the restoring the stencils for the Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Room that was reassembled within the new addition of the Art Institute of Chicago.
