ABSTRACT:Chicago architect James W. Hammond first worked in the office of Eliel and Eero Saarinen and then in the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, where he was elected to partnership in 1955. In 1961, he became a founding partner of the Chicago architecture firm Hammond Beeby and Babka. The collection contains photographs of projects and colleagues from his various partnerships and a business brochure.

ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The collection of photographs was donated by Hammond's sister, Mary Hammond Rodman, to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in 1986.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
James Wright Hammond (1918-1986) studied at the University of Michigan, and completed a B.S. in Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology in 1942. Before the completion of his degree he had worked in the offices of Eliel and Eero Saarinen; and Perkins, Wheeler and Will. After World War II he joined the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and was elected a General Partner in 1955. In 1961 Hammond left SOM to establish the new partnership Hammond and Roesch. Ten years later he entered into partnership with Thomas H. Beeby, known as Hammond Beeby and Associates. With the addition of Bernard F. Babka in 1977, the firm's name changed to Hammond Beeby and Babka. Hammond was elected Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and was active on national and Chicago Chapter committees of the AIA.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
Projects from the various partnerships in which Hammond participated are documented through photographs. Also included are two group photographs taken of the Skidmore, Owings & Merrill partners during the years in which Hammond was a principal. A promotional brochure of the projects of Hammond Beeby and Babka dates to c.1985.
