ABSTRACT:This collection includes images and other papers documenting landscape architect Gertrude Eisendrath Deimel Kuh's designs for residential properties primarily in the Chicago area.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Color slides and color photographic prints, correspondence and printed papers.
ORIGINATION: Kuh, Gertrude, 1893-1977
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:This collection was donated to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives by Edith Antognoli, a former business associate of Gertrude Kuh. Miscellaneous items were donated by other individuals, including Kuh's son, John Deimel, as noted in the collection inventory.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Gertrude Eisendrath was born in Racine, Wisconsin, and moved to Chicago with her family in 1899. After studying briefly at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, she transferred to the Lowthorpe School of Horticulture and Landscape Design in Groton, Massachusetts, from which she received a degree in 1917. She apprenticed with Ellen Biddle Shipman in Massachusetts, then returned to Chicago in 1921. In 1942, she married George Kuh, former husband of well known Chicago art critic and gallery-owner Katherine Kuh.

From the 1930s until her retirement in the early 1970s, Kuh designed at least four hundred projects, many with the assistance of her associates, Mary Long Rogers and Edith Antognoli, and her preferred landscape contractor, Robert Lowden. Very little is known of her work prior to 1950, since Kuh worked from her own residence and discarded most of the records from her early work during various moves. However, more than two-thirds of her projects were completed between 1950 and 1976, primarily for residences in the North Shore communities of Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park and Lake Forest, Illinois.

Although Kuh regularly designed gardens for existing older houses, she also collaborated on contemporary new homes and additions with a number of noted Chicago architects, including Edward Dart, Ernest A. Grunsfeld, Jr., Ernest A. Grunsfeld III, Herman Lackner, and Sam Marks.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
This collection documents Kuh's landscape designs for residential projects in the Chicago region from the 1950s to the 1970s through slides and photographs. The collection also contains two letters from Ku's mentor, noted landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
SERIES I: SLIDES. Slides are arranged alphabetically by project name, with dates noted where known.

SERIES II: MISCELLANEOUS. Correspondence is followed by a brochure and project photographs.
