PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Printed papers, correspondence, typescript papers, black and white photographic prints, black and white photographic negatives, black and white photomechanical prints, and architectural reprographic prints.
ORIGINATION: Schmidt, Garden and Martin
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The majority of this collection was a gift from Schmidt, Garden and Erikson to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in December, 1976 and c.2003. A collection of copy photographs in Series II was a gift from Schmidt, Garden and Erikson to Department of Architecture at The Art Institute of Chicago, probably c.1990-1993. Papers from Series VI were gifted to the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries in 2009. Additional materials were donated by Steve Heimerle in November 2014.

HISTORICAL NOTE:
Among the last members of the Chicago School's "second generation" of architects, Richard Ernst Schmidt (1865-1959) and Hugh Mackie Gordon Garden (1873-1961) worked with partners Edgar D. Martin (1865-1951) and subsequently Carl A. Erikson (1888-1958?). Originally Richard E. Schmidt, Architect, the firm was renamed Richard E. Schmidt, Garden and Martin in 1906. In 1925, after Martin's departure, the firm was known as Schmidt, Garden and Erikson.

Richard E. Schmidt came to the United Statesac from Bavaria with his parents as an infant. He attended, but did not graduate from, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Schmidt established his architectural practice in 1896 and received his first major commission, the Alexian Brothers Hospital, in 1897. Early in his career he served as Cook County Architect and was Chicago Building Commissioner from 1934 to 1942.

Hugh Garden was born in Toronto, Canada, and at the age of fourteen moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his widowed mother and family. Apprenticed, rather than formally educated, he entered private practice as a free-lance designer and perspective artist in Chicago in 1893. He was well known for his architectural renderings that he made for Frank Lloyd Wright, and Richard E. Schmidt, among others. Garden's designs include the Montgomery Ward Office Tower (1898), the Schoenhofen Brewery powerhouse (1902), and Michael Reese Hospital (1905).

Edgar D. Martin was born in Burlington, Iowa. He studied advanced engineering, mathematics and art in Paris, France. He specialized in hospitals and was the designer of Cook County Hospital (1913), Chicago. Martin was appointed Illinois State Architect after leaving Schmidt, Garden and Martin. The firm was dissolved in 1996.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
These materials document the firm's work throughout the United States, with an emphasis on projects in Chicago and the Midwest, designed between 1898 and the 1960s.
