ACQUISITION INFORMATION:H. Grant Sailor donated this collection to the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries in 1972 and donated additional materials in 1995.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Homer Grant Sailor (1887-1968) graduated from the architecture department at Armour Institute in 1911, and entered Louis Sullivan's practice as a draftsman. He subsequently worked at Chatten & Hammond, state architects for Illinois. In 1917 Sailor entered private practice, designing many residences and low-rise commercial buildings concentrated in Chicago's South Side communities--particularly Englewood and Beverly Hills/Morgan Park--and the northern and western Chicago suburbs.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
Thirty-four projects by Homer Sailor are documented in black and white photographs and some plans drawn in ink. These objects were originally placed in an album, which was later disassembled for the safety of the photographs. The projects are arranged in series by building type, and then alphabetically by project name, with the date of construction noted when known.

SERIES III: APARTMENT BUILDINGS WITH STORES. Drawings and photographs are listed in alphabetical order by building name.

SERIES IV: COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS. Drawings and photographs are listed in alphabetical order by building name.

SERIES V: MISCELLANY. Drawings and photographs for a synagogue are followed by personal photographs, correspondence, and papers related to Sailor's architectural work.
