ACQUISITION INFORMATION:This collection of papers was donated by Esther Sparks to the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries in December 1996 and July 2003. Additional materials were a gift From the Library of Esther Sparks, 2015.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Esther Sparks was born in Washington, D.C. in 1932; however, her life and career are centered primarily in the Chicago area. She received her B.A. (1951) from the University of Chicago, her M.A. (1968) and Ph.D. (1971) from Northwestern University in Evanston. A Biographical Dictionary of Painters and Sculptors in Illinois, 1808-1945 was Ms. Sparks's graduate dissertation. From 1970 to 1984, Ms. Sparks was employed by The Art Institute of Chicago in the Department of Prints and Drawings, as Curatorial Assistant (1970-1972), Associate Curator (1972-1983), and Associate Curator in Charge (1983-1984). She was a faculty member of The School of The Art Institute from 1977 to 1983. Currently, she teaches and lectures throughout the Chicago area, including Northwestern University and the Art Institute, as well as at the University of Mississippi, Oxford. She has also written numerous exhibition catalogues, available in the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries' collection. Esther Sparks Sprague died on April 3, 2015.
