BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
John van der Meulen was born September 21, 1913 in Holland Michigan. He attended Holland, Michigan public schools, graduating in 1931, and received an AB in Mathematics from Hope College, Holland, Michigan, in 1935. In 1938 he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the College of Architecture at University of Michigan. After completing his education, van der Meulen was employed as an apprentice at the architectural firm of Louis J. Sarvis in Battle Creek, Michigan, from 1938 to 1942.

Before being drafted by the U.S. Army in 1942, van der Meulen attained his first architectural registration in Michigan. Van der Meulen originally served as an engineer and then as a violinist in the 344th Army Services band. After completing his military service in 1945, van der Meulen established an independent practice in Chicago and subsequently worked as an assistant professor of architecture at the Institute of Design in Chicago (now the Illinois Institute of Technology) under László Moholy-Nagy, Director (1945-1946) and Serge Chermayeff, Director (1947-1951). Van der Meulen's other teaching experience included Visiting Professor, School of Architecture, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York (Spring 1964); and Visiting Professor, School of Architecture, Washington University, Saint Louis, Missouri (Spring 1966, 1967, 1968).

During the years 1951 to 1954, van der Meulen associated with Ralph Rapson, a modernist architect, on work for U.S. State Department, including Stockholm and Copenhagen Embassies, staff apartments in Boulogne and consulate at Le Havre. He was the consulting architect for the U.S. Department of State, Foreign Buildings Operations for The Hague, in Stockholm and Paris during the years 1951-1954. From 1954 to 1957 van der Meulen was employed as an Architect Associate with the firm of Harry Weese and Associates in Chicago under which he completed several projects including the Hyde Park Urban Redevelopment Project in 1955.

In 1958 van der Meulen reestablished his independent architectural practice that would continue until his death in 1994. During a brief period from 1973 to 1977 van der Meulen worked with Richard Baringer, an American architect, in the U.S. Virgin Islands on various college and public projects. John van der Meulen is best known for his architectural works including foreign embassy buildings in Stockholm and Copenhagen as well as various public buildings and private residences. He was also a passionate musical arranger, pianist and violinist. John van der Meulen died September 12, 1994 in Chicago.
