BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Benjamin Weese was born on June 4, 1929 in Evanston, Illinois, the youngest of five siblings. From an early age, Weese's older brother Harry M. Weese--fourteen years Ben's senior--played the role of cultural mentor, exposing his younger brother to literature, music, and modern design and architecture. Weese's artistic sensibilities were nurtured further by attending László Moholy-Nagy's New Bauhaus Saturday School in 1941. Weese received a BA in architecture in 1951 and an MA in 1957, both from Harvard University.

During Weese's college years he began to develop the deep sense of social responsibility, which would earn him a reputation as one of Chicago's most thoughtful and humane builders. Working with the Philips Brooks settlement house in East Boston, on a Quaker work camp, and during the Korean War with the Church of the Brethren as an assistant processing refugees were all formative experiences that would be later addressed in Weese's philosophy of life and architecture, which contends that "the life of a person and their craft can be...democratically expressed." Weese's belief in the inherent beauty of the vernacular is reflected not only stylistically through his work, but also by his choice of clients, project types, preferred buildings materials, and commitment to contextual building and pragmatic historic preservation. Despite his admiration for many canonical Modernist architects, Weese posits that the world isn't going to be "saved by [Mies van der Rohe's] Barcelona pavilion and structures of that idiom."

With the exception of one summer at the École des Beaux-Arts in Fontainebleau, Weese spent most school intercessions in Chicago working for Harry Weese and Associates (HWA). After completing his master's degree in 1957, Weese worked briefly at The Architects' Collaborative in Cambridge, Massachusetts but soon returned to Chicago permanently to join his brother's firm full-time. As a designer at Harry Weese and Associates, many early projects designed and managed by Ben Weese have historically been attributed to Harry Weese. These include the Northside Junior High School, Columbus, IN (1961), College Commons, Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA (1965); and the LR-14 Townhouses, Chicago, IL (1966).

During his tenure at HWA, Weese devised an innovative scheme for developing economical high-rise apartment designs while simultaneously maximizing desirable views. In this scheme, which Weese called "minimum perimeter" floor planning, plan forms are closely adapted to the needs of individual projects rather than using rigid structural modules or standardized plan shapes, working organically from a floor plan rather than from a structural system. In "minimum perimeter" buildings, savings from the reduction of necessary wall area offsets the extra cost associated with non-modular construction. Several high-rises were designed and constructed using the "minimum perimeter" scheme, including: Lake Village East, Chicago, IL (1974); John Knox Towers, Norfolk, VA (1975); and the 53 C Apartments, Chicago, IL.

In 1977 Ben Weese left HWA to found the architectural firm of Weese Seegers Hickey Weese with the other principals Cynthia Weese and Dennis Langley. Since its inception, Weese Seegers Hickey Weese and its successor firm Weese Langley Weese have completed a wide range of residential, commercial, and institutional projects around the country, with a particularly strong focus on work for the non-profit sector. The firm's non-profit commissions have included multi-family and scattered site housing, elderly housing, churches, libraries, schools, and SROs--single residence occupancy buildings or rooming houses, which have the become in recent years the primary means for community-based special needs housing. In Chicago alone, Weese Langley Weese has worked on the construction or adaptive re-use of 12 SROs and 11 low and moderate income family housing projects, with notable emphasis on the historically working-class and increasingly gentrifying neighborhoods of Uptown, Pilsen, and the near northwest side. The firm has worked with or supported numerous community groups including some of the most productive community development corporations in the City of Chicago.

Weese's commitment to the non-profit sector is evident in his design and renovation of nearly forty educational facilities and libraries throughout the country. For Williams College Library in Williamstown, MA (1974), Weese developed original two-story study carrels and other furniture pieces some of which have since been patented. Weese's vertical addition and renovation of Walter Netsch's Burling Library at Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA (1983) doubled study and stack space, adding only 11,000 square feet to the original 45,000, while retaining the original footprint and glass façade. Other notable educational projects include the Chicago City Day School, Chicago, IL (1990); Coe College Art Museum and Library, Cedar Rapids, IA (1988); Wilson Library and Landis Academic Center, University of LaVerne, LaVerne, CA (1996); and several buildings for Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, IA.

Though considering himself to be pragmatic rather than dogmatic in regards to the subject, Weese had nevertheless been a consistently outspoken advocate for historic preservation of the built urban fabric. In 1957, Weese, along with a group of Chicagoans including Leon Despres, John Vinci, Will Hasbrouck and Richard Nickel, formed the Chicago Heritage Committee to bring attention to the widespread demolition of many architecturally significant structures, such as Adler and Sullivan's Garrick Theater. Later in the early 1960s Weese spearheaded the fundraising campaign, which eventually saved H.H. Richardson's Glessner House from the wrecking ball.

In 1974, Weese obtained a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to continue a program of offering space needs analysis for county courthouses across the country, many of which were in danger of demolition. Weese's unorthodox scheme for the preservation and relocation of portions of Frank Lloyd Wright's Francisco Terrace Apartments successfully integrated the original terra cotta cornices, arch and decorative columns and lintels into a "Prairie Revival" courtyard complex in Oak Park, replicating both the original massing and details. Another example of Weese's flexible and pragmatic approach to preservation was his collaborative work with New York engineer Hans Karl Bandel to save the largest Guastavino tile dome ever built. The dome, at St. John the Divine in New York City, which was in danger of falling, was threatened with demolition due to the lack of funds needed to properly restore it. Weese and Bandel were able to save the dome using the innovative combination of roof insulation, climate control, and a safety net, which was color-matched with the existing terracotta. Weese has also served on the Chicago Landmarks Commission since 1998.

In 1976, a group of architects including Weese, Stanley Tigerman, Larry Booth and Stuart Cohen organized the exhibit "Chicago Architects" in protest to a more conventional exhibit entitled "One Hundred Years of Architecture in Chicago" which had debuted in Munich in 1973 before arriving in Chicago. Opening at Cooper Union and then Harvard University before its final exhibition at Harry Weese's Time/Life Building in Chicago, "Chicago Architects" was promoted as a salon des refusés, showcasing Chicago architects such as Pond and Pond, Dwight Perkins, Andrew Rebori, and Howard Fisher that had been omitted from the larger exhibit, which Weese felt was "stealing history."

The dialogue generated by "Chicago Architects," which had "aggressively counter-culture feeling to it," attracted other like-minded Chicago architects to the cause and with the addition of James Ingo Freed, Jim Nagle, and Thomas Beeby the group dubbed itself the Chicago Seven. Formed in response to the "crisis of identity" in architecture at that time as well as Chicago's waning architectural reputation, the group staged a series of challenging conceptual exhibitions in 1977 and 1978, which precipitated much debate about post-Miesian and post-Modernist architecture in Chicago. "Seven Chicago Architects," which opened at the Richard Gray Gallery, Chicago in 1976, featured a house by each architect, each of which was a response to "ideas of man's relationship to nature, contemporary societal trends and the presumptions of modern architecture." In December 1977, having added Helmut Jahn to its roster, the group mounted "The Exquisite Corpse," an exhibition of townhouse models at Walter Kelly Gallery, Chicago. The Chicago Seven influenced the regional architectural community by opening up Chicago to small firms, legitimizing undoctrinaire views, and "establishing the validity of the smaller scale."

Though largely conceptual in nature, the work of the Chicago Seven clearly reflects many of the core architectural and philosophical tenets evident in Weese's own work, such as the importance of vernacular styles and materials, commitment to contextual design, and an acute awareness of history as a continuum. Weese argues for a more complex approach to the selection of building materials, citing the de facto use of glass in modern buildings as impractical, "ephemeral" and even "dangerous." A return to a greater use of brick and stone in modern buildings has been championed by Weese and is best exemplified through such varied projects as 100 W. Chestnut (apartments), Chicago, IL; Chicago City Day School, Chicago, IL (1990); and Evelyn Chapel, Illinois Wesleyan University, Bloomington, IL (1985). With a strong belief in modern architecture that "doesn't leave the past forever behind," Weese has developed a reputation as an architect finely attuned to the needs of a site, its history and context, able to design buildings that are simultaneously modern and historic but free of historicist pastiche. The Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria, IL (1989), which was built to replace a turn of the century English Gothic-style church that had burned down, was designed not only to fulfill the practical needs of a modern congregation but also to evoke the "general atmospheric memories" of the original building.

Weese has been a visiting critic and lecturer at numerous educational institutions including Cooper Union, New York; Iowa State University, Iowa City, IA; Washington University, St. Louis, MO; Harvard University; Renssalear Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY; Miami University, Oxford, OH; University of Illinois, Champaign and Chicago; and Technische Hochschule, Vienna. Weese has also received numerous CCAIA awards, was a founding member of the Chicago Architectural Foundation (1966), Chicago Architectural Club president (1985-1986), trustee and president of the Graham Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts (1988-1999), and was elected AIA Fellow in 1974.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
This collection includes project files, correspondence, photographs, printed materials, office papers, personal papers and drawings documenting the work of American architect Ben Weese. These papers document some of Weese's earliest work, including apartment buildings, renovations and urban renewal projects designed while working at the firm of his brother, Harry Weese and Associates. This includes a selection of his "minimum perimeter" buildings. This collection catalogs both the built and unbuilt work of Weese Seegers Hickey Weese and its successor firm, Weese Langley Weese, locally and across the United States, from the 1970s to the 1990s.This collection includes a cross-section of building and project types, including but not limited to residential, educational, religious and public commissions. The firms' heavy involvement in the design and renovation of nearly forty educational facilities and libraries throughout the country is documented through a large collection of drawings and project papers in this archive. Of particular interest is Weese's vertical addition and renovation of Walter Netsch's Burling Library at Grinnell College, Grinnell, IA (1983) which doubled study and stack space, adding only 11,000 square feet to the original 45,000, while retaining the original footprint and glass façade. Many of Weese's original pen and pencil furniture sketches for Grinnell and other school libraries are extant in Series II, Project Papers. Weese's firms were also heavily involved in the development of low-income housing and Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels in Chicago, and that interest is reflected strongly in our holdings.Aside from the photographs, project papers and product samples which relate most directly to their architectural practice—and in terms of volume, make up the majority of this collection—there is also a significant group of papers which document Ben and Cynthia Weese's involvement in civic, professional and academic organizations. Ben Weese's interest in historic preservation is chronicled through the firm's work as well as through advocacy and committee groups which are documented in Series III, Professional Papers. There are also many drawings and other documents relating to the Chicago Seven exhibit group and their activities.
