ABSTRACT:Posters and ephemera created by the British Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in efforts to encourage enlistment in the armed services during World War I.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:Posters and printed papers.
ORIGINATION: Great Britain. Parliamentary Recruiting Committee.
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The collection was a purchase of the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries and was transferred to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in 2016. The materials were apparently originally organized in a scrapbook of which the "page" numbers in the old index (see Box.FF 1.51) are a reference.

HISTORICAL NOTE:
The United Kingdom joined the Allied Powers against the Central Powers, in August of 1914. During wartime, propaganda such as posters and pamphlets were used to boost morale and were key elements in the distribution of information. Such posters and ephemera contained themes of patriotism and national symbols, wartime finances, home front issues, and most prominently recruitment and enlistment. World War I also saw the first compulsory military service bill in Britain. Formerly an all-volunteer army, in 1916, military service was required of all single men in England, Scotland and Wales between the ages of 18 at 41, except those who were already employed in jobs essential into the war effort. Before the forced conscription bill, recruitment posters served to incited in young men the desire to join the service, and shame those who denied enlistment. After 1916, posters hoped to instill a sense national pride, and remind the nation of the effort needed to maintain their military. Created by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, these posters became iconic aspects of World War I history.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The World War I Recruitment Posters and Ephmera from Great Britain collection consists of posters and ephemera created by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee urging young men to enlist in the war efforts. Other materials include posters, leaflets, and pamphlets regarding the war efforts on the home front, such as war bonds and the sending of wheat to the troops and recruitment notices. Series I contain large, color posters commissioned by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee. Materials are arranged alphabetically by title and subject. Series II contains various ephemera, such as leaflets, printed notices about military actions, and recruitment notices. Materials are arranged alphabetically by title and subject.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
SERIES I: POSTERS.
