ABSTRACT:This collection consists of microfilm aperture cards and prints of plans and drawings related to projects designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin in Canberra and Sydney, Australia, as well as a small selection of projects from the U.S. An additional small collection of drawings was traced by Peter Wille from Griffin drawings, and a map was donated by Marion Mahony Griffin.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:Correspondence, photographs, aperture cards, architectural reprographic prints, a CD-ROM, printed materials, computer printouts, photocopies and realia.
ORIGINATION: This collection was primarily created by the Ryerson and Burnham Archives from aperture cards gathered from various Australian sources by Professor James Weirick and Ian C. Griggs in the late 1960s. The aperture cards document architectural drawings held in the Archives of the City of Sydney (Municipal Council), the private collection of James Weirick, and the Willoughby City Central Library in Chatswood, New South Wales, Australia. Additionally, photocopies of drawings traced by Peter Wille were made from original drawings by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin.
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The aperture cards were a gift from Prof. James Weirick to the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries in 1969. Peter Wille donated the photocopies of his traced drawings to the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries in 1969. The map of Canberra was donated to the Ryerson Library by Marion Mahony Griffin in 1949. The architectural reprographic prints of the Franke and Purnell Residences were a gift of Wilbert Hasbrouck in 2011. Additional materials were donated to the library by Mary Woolever, Jane Clark and Steve Flora (2014). Some materials were also purchased by the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Walter Burley Griffin (1876-1937) was born in Maywood, Illinois and raised in the Chicago suburbs of Oak Park and Elmhurst. Upon receiving his B.S. in Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1899. he worked as a draftsman for the Chicago architect Dwight Perkins, and subsequently joined the Oak Park, Illinois, studio of Frank Lloyd Wright. He practiced under Wright from 1901 until 1905, when Griffin abruptly resigned his position with Wright. Shortly thereafter, in 1906, Griffin established a private practice focusing primarily on residential and landscape commissions. He created more than 130 designs in his Chicago office for buildings and landscapes in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Illinois-born Marion Lucy Mahony (1871-1961) was the second woman to graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's four-year architectural program in 1894. Upon receiving her degree, Marion returned home to Chicago to become the state's first woman licensed to practice architecture by examination. Overall, she was the third woman licensed in the state of Illinois after Elizabeth B. Wallace and Mel Dora Ice in late 1897. In 1895 she began work under Frank Lloyd Wright in his Oak Park studio. During her fourteen-year tenure with Wright, Marion became one of his primary designers and renderers, responsible for the many furnishings of his houses--including murals, mosaics, leaded glass, and lighting fixtures--and for architectural drawings, including significant portions of Wright's noted Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwürfe of 1910.

In June 1911, Walter and Marion were married. Two years later, Walter went to Australia to present the couple's winning plan for the new federal capital, Canberra. It was during this visit that Walter was appointed to the position of Federal Capital Director of Design and Construction. This post necessitated the Griffins' permanent move to Australia in 1914. His association with the development of Canberra was not a successful one, and after much political infighting, he was forced out of his position as director in 1920. Although elements of the master plan for Canberra were implemented, none of the building designs were ever realized. By 1925, the Griffins had moved to Sydney to begin the design and development of Castlecrag, a "utopia" of small houses and community buildings established under the supervision of the Greater Sydney Development Association, for which Walter served as Managing Director. Of the more than fifty houses Marion helped Walter design for Castlecrag, only eighteen structures were completed. During their stay in Australia, the Griffins received a commission to design the University of Lucknow (India) Library. They moved to India in 1935 to oversee the design and construction of that building and subsequently received a number of commissions including the buildings for the United Provinces Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition in Lucknow. While working in Lucknow in 1937, Walter developed peritonitis and died.

After Walter's death, Marion returned to Sydney to arrange business affairs then continued on to Chicago to live with her niece. In the 1940s she wrote her extensive memoir The Magic of America. Marion died in Chicago in 1961.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
This collection consists of printed papers, microfilm aperture cards and prints of plans and drawings of projects designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin in Sydney, Australia, as well as a smaller selection of projects from other parts of Australia, India and the U.S. Most of the architectural drawings in this collection were produced by Walter Burley Griffin, Marion Mahony Griffin, and other unidentified draftsmen; other documents were produced by the Greater Sydney Development Association, the Greater Sydney Management Association, and various Australian newspapers and magazines. The microfilmed images have been scanned as TIFF files and placed on a CD-ROM for patron use. Other materials include personal photos of Marion and friends, a photo scrapbook of the Mess Residence, a small amount of correspondence, photocopies from other research institutions holding Griffin-related papers, genealogical and biographical papers, and some miscellaneous scholarly writings about the Griffins. Lastly, the collections also includes a small group of drawings photocopied from tracings of original Griffin drawings made by Peter Wille between 1965 and 1968.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
SERIES I: PROJECT PAPERS. This series is divided into two subseries: Australia Projects and U.S. Projects. In the Australia Projects subseries, the CD-ROM containing the TIFF files of the drawings appears first. Subsequently, paper prints of the microfilmed drawings are ordered alphabetically by location: Castlecove, Castlecrag and Covecrag, with additional subdivision for the neighborhoods within Castlecrag. Several individual buildings in Sydney and Willoughby, New South Wales, are listed last. Projects within each grouping are listed in alphabetical order by client or building name. The number in parentheses following the drawing title indicates the corresponding TIFF file on the CD-ROM and the original aperture card. Materials in the U.S. Projects subseries are first arranged alphabetically by location. Within each location, materials are arranged alphabetically by project name.

SERIES II: PHOTOGRAPHS. Divided into two subseries, Projects and Personal.

SERIES III: CORRESPONDENCE.

SERIES IV: PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL PAPERS. Divided into three sunseries: Biographical Materials, Legal Documents, and Works by Marion Mahony Griffin.

SERIES V: RESEARCH MATERIALS. Divided into two subseries, Griffin Research Collections and Printed Papers.

SERIES VI: APERTURE CARDS. Aperture cards are restricted. Library patrons may use the CD-ROM in Series I to print images for study purposes only. Cards are listed in original numerical order.

SERIES VII: PETER WILLE TRACINGS. Photocopies of Wille's tracings are ordered alphabetically by project name. Dates noted are those of Wille's drawings, not the Griffin drawings from which these tracings were made.

PROJECTS:
Box 3
Mess, Harry M., Residence, photo scrapbook.
Photographs and printed papers Includes 41 objects (40 photographs, 1 printed item), from at least two sets of photographs, depicting various exterior views of the house throughout the seasons of the year. Also includes shots of the surrounding grounds and interiors of the house (including Marion's Mahony Griffin's fireplace). What appears to be a surveying crew is also pictured as well as at least two photos of the house under construction. An architectural rendering of the home published in Western Architect (August 1913) is pasted inside the front cover of the album and provides both context and orientation for the photographs. This delineation is clearly by Marion Griffin; the fireplace is prominently featured, and the rendering bears her distinctive MMG monogram. Purchased by the Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, 2009.
