ABSTRACT:Chicago architect Edwin Clark began practicing in 1906 and designed a broad variety of public and private projects. This collection includes diaries, project photographs, and scrapbooks documenting Clark's architectural and military careers.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:Printed papers, scrapbooks, co mputer printouts and diaries, and black and white photographic prints.

ACQUISITION INFORMATION:This majority of this collection was donated by Robert O. Clark, Jr. and Edwin H. Clark II to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in 1995. Additional materials were donated by John Vinci, 2012.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Edwin Hill Clark was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 11, 1878, and was educated at Phillips Academy, Yale University, and in England, France and Germany. He began practicing architecture in 1906, establishing the partnership Otis & Clark. During World War I he served as a U.S. Naval Reserve Lieutenant. In 1920 he established the firm Clark and Walcott where he worked for five years. Some of his prominent works include the Chicago Zoological Park, the Lincoln Park Administration Building, the Primate House and Aquarium, the Winnetka Village Hall, and the Hinsdale Memorial Building. He was the architect for many private residences in the Chicago area and throughout the United States, including Mrs. James Ward Thorne's home in Santa Barbara, California.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
Series I, Photographs, contains photographs of Clark's projects, arranged alphabetically by city location, then by project name; a few family photographs are located at the rear. Series II, Scrapbooks, contains a scrapbook album documenting Clark's architectural career, and a second scrapbook documenting his military career. Series III, Diaries, includes twelve five-year diaries for the years 1901 to 1960. Series IV, Project Papers, includes drawings and other documentation.
