BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
D. CODER TAYLOR (1913-2000). Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and raised in Cumberland, Maryland, Taylor studied architecture at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. He began his architectural career in 1935 as a draftsman in the Chicago office of his uncle, R. Harold Zook. He served in the military from 1942 to 1945, in which he gained construction and engineering experience. Taylor's design for a modest single-family house won the 1945 Chicago Tribune Small Homes Competition. As a principal in the Chicago architectural firm Holsman, Holsman, Klekamp, and Taylor, he collaborated on residential developments, including the Promontory Apartments and 860-880 Lake Shore Drive Apartments in Chicago with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Taylor left the firm in 1952 to join Lloyd Morgan Yost in the partnership Yost and Taylor. During their eight-year partnership, Taylor primarily designed military housing and commercial buildings. Taylor left in 1960 to form Coder Taylor and Associates, and became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1969.

LLOYD MORGAN YOST (1908-1992). Yost studied at Northwestern University and Ohio State University, receiving his bachelor's degree in architecture in 1931. After working in various Chicago architectural firms, Yost opened his own office in Wilmette, Illinois, specializing in single-family houses. Yost closely studied Frank Lloyd Wright and considered Wright's emphasis on open plans and circulation to be inspirational. During World War II, Yost published his residential designs in popular magazines such as Household and Small Homes Guide. After the war, his small office in Kenilworth, Illinois, designed and built single-family residences, suburban housing developments, and commercial buildings primarily in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago. Yost's 1948 design for the Norman Deno residence in Highland Park, Illinois, won a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects. In 1952, Yost invited D. Coder Taylor to join his office as Yost and Taylor, a partnership that lasted eight years. In his writings and speeches, Yost actively promoted the role of the architectural profession in the post-war housing boom. He served as chairperson of the Association of North Shore Architects, as president of the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and as executive director and trustee of the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Yost was elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1952. He retired and moved to Arkansas in 1972.
