BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Walter Stanton Brewster (1872-1954):

Born in Evanston, Illinois, Brewster was a partner in Russell, Brewster, and Company, Chicago's oldest stock and bond brokerage house. One of a handful of American collectors fascinated with James McNeill Whistler, he became very serious about his collections, adding to his holdings original prints and drawings by the artist, as well as exhibition catalogues, books, newspaper clippings, periodical articles, autograph letters, photographs, caricatures, and many other items inspired by the "cult of Whistler." Brewster donated a large collection of his Whistler material to The Art Institute of Chicago in the 1930s.

James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903):

James McNeill Whistler was a central figure in the development of European and American art in the nineteenth century. He won wide acclaim for his graphic work from an early age; in painting, he rejected sentiment and anecdote for and emphasis on design and harmonious studies in tone and color. His controversial position kept him at the forefront of public attention throughout his career, especially after his libel case against John Ruskin in 1878. He was President of the Royal Society of British Artists and of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters, and Gravers. Working principally in England and France, he was awarded many international honors and had followers throughout Europe and America.
