BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Mary (née Hubachek) Reynolds (1891-1950) was a pivotal figure in the Surrealist movement of the early twentieth century. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota into a wealthy family (Frank Rudolph Hubachek, father; Nellie Brookes Hubachek, mother; Frank Brookes Hubachek, brother), Reynolds left home in 1909 to attend Vassar College in upstate New York. Returning home in 1913 to pursue a graduate degree, Reynolds continued her education at the University of Minnesota. In July of 1916, after only a brief courtship, Mary Hubachek and insurance agent Matthew Given Reynolds were married, quickly relocating to Manhattan's vibrant, Bohemian Greenwich Village district. In late 1917, Matthew Reynolds enlisted in the armed forces, but in January of 1919, succumbed to influenza. The young American war widow moved to Paris in the spring of 1921, "to be close to his spirit." Here, in the artists' colony of Montparnasse, Reynolds quickly found her place among the circle of artists and writers that would become known as the Surrealists. In July 1923 she met Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) and began what he called "a true liaison, over many, many years, and very agreeable." Although Duchamp maintained a second apartment for himself, the couple lived for the next two and a half decades in various locales in France.

During the 1920s, Reynolds studied with the Parisian master bookbinder Pierre Legrain (1888-1929) and applied her skills to books by such friends and artistic luminaries as Max Ernst, Man Ray, Paul Eluard, André Breton, Jean Cocteau, Alfred Jarry and Salvador Dali. Choosing surprising and unorthodox binding materials--among them toad skins, corset stays, broken teacup handles, thermometers, sponge rubber, and kid gloves--Reynolds's work was sought out and admired by many the Surrealist community. Though the extent of Marcel Duchamp's involvement in Reynolds's work is debated, it is well established that they did produce numerous collaborative efforts. Whether out of modesty or indifference to recognition, Reynolds refused to exhibit her bindings. Consequently, her art languished in relative obscurity outside of the Surrealists until after her death. According to the American composer Virgil Thomson, Reynolds was "relentlessly bohemian," although art collector and socialite Marguerite "Peggy" Guggenheim said "she was the only person in bohemia with any money, yet she was always broke because she lent it all away the minute it arrived from America." To many of her European artist-friends she was a benefactor, assisting them financially when times were rough.

Besides her contributions to the Parisian art community, Reynolds was a leader in the French Resistance during the World War II German occupation of France. Using her home in Paris as a safe haven and relay station for many friends and acquaintances, Reynolds risked imprisonment and death to ensure the safe passage of artists such as Jean Hélion into unoccupied territory. Choosing to stay in occupied Paris after the border closing, Reynolds came under increasing scrutiny from German invasion forces. When she did decide to flee, in September of 1942, a Nazi railroad raid forced Reynolds to cross into Spain on foot via a treacherous passage through the Pyrenees, on her way to catch a neutral vessel from Portugal to the United States. Reynolds arrived in New York City on January 6, 1943, where she and Duchamp remained for the duration of the war. Reynolds attempted to gain employment with the O.S.S, but was unsuccessful. Six weeks after the end of the war, Reynolds returned--sans Duchamp--to Paris, though he did join her again briefly for most of 1946. In her last years, Reynolds worked as the Paris representative for View magazine and completed sporadic book bindings. Mary Reynolds died of uterine cancer on September 30, 1950. After her death, Duchamp, the executor of her estate, sorted through her correspondence and personal possessions, destroying much of what would have provided clues to her somewhat mysterious role in the Parisian art world.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
This collection documents the life and work of Mary Louise Reynolds with particular focus on her early Parisian years (1921-1943) and the posthumous creation of the Mary Reynolds collection of books and memorabilia at The Art Institute of Chicago and its related catalog, Surrealism and its Affinities. Perhaps most unique in this collection is the vivid chronicle of the pivotal roles which Reynolds's brother, Frank Brookes Hubachek, and Marcel Duchamp played in facilitating her financial support of expatriate artists during World War II, and their tenacity in the establishment and preservation of her artistic legacy after her death. Series I, Correspondence, consists of letters between Mary Reynolds, Frank Brookes Hubachek, Marcel Duchamp and a host of other friends and associates, including: Kay Boyle, Kathleen Cannell, Marguerite "Peggy" Guggenheim and Elizabeth Humes. These letters cover a variety of topics though predominant are discussions of war developments and commentary on daily concerns, Reynold's return to the US and complicated financial arrangements between friends and relatives. Hubachek and Duchamp repeatedly express concern for Reynold's safety in occupied France and many (ultimately) aborted plans for her are considered. Due to restrictions levied by the government during the war, Hubachek and Duchamp also acted as conduits for financial transactions taking place at Reynolds's request. These transactions involved both sending money into the occupied zone as well as stateside transfers between expatriate relatives. As Germany's hold on France grew stronger, it became increasingly difficult for Americans to escape from occupied territories. Correspondence between Hubachek and various State Department officials record his attempts to secure safe passage for Reynolds. Hubachek also sought the assistance of officials from some museums including The Art Institute of Chicago's Curator of Prints and Drawings, Carl Schniewind. Additionally, a sizable portion of letters in this series relate to matters transpiring after Reynolds's death or matters only tangentially related to her activities while alive. Reynolds's close friend Elizabeth Humes and Marcel Duchamp both corresponded quite regularly with Frank Brookes Hubachek. The Humes letters discuss the creation and donation of the Art Institute's Mary Reynolds Collection, Humes's finances, health problems and recent retirement. The Duchamp letters document, besides Duchamp's concern for Reynolds's well-being and finances, his own difficulties obtaining passage to the US. Finally, this series includes a small group of letters regarding a donation made by Frank Brookes Hubachek to Vassar College in honor of Mary Reynolds on the occasion of the 50th reunion of the class of 1913. These letters contain reminiscences of Reynolds and a short biography written by Hubachek. Series II, Personal Papers, is comprised of ephemera such as financial contracts and receipts, biographical notes, newspaper and magazine articles, bookplates prints, business cards, and identification cards related to both Reynolds and Duchamp. Most notable are declassified debriefing reports from the Office of Strategic Services produced immediately upon Reynolds's escape from occupied France. A wealth of personal data is also available in these reports such as residence addresses, an employment history and personal references. Series III, Art Institute Papers, collects material relating to the creation and administration of the Mary Reynolds collection of original book-bindings, the formulation and production of Duchamp-designed bookplates for the collection, the accessioning of art works into the library and museum collections (mostly Duchamp and Jacques Villon) and the design and production of the Reynolds collection catalog, Surrealism and its Affinities, which was intended to contain commissioned works by Jean Cocteau, Alexander Calder and Jacques Villon. Correspondents include: Djuna Barnes, Alexander Calder, Jean Cocteau, Marguerite "Peggy" Guggenheim, Nancy Cunard and Katherine Kuh. Also included are thank you letters from individuals receiving a copy of Surrealism and its Affinities. These include: Janet Flanner, Harold Joachim, Nancy Cunard, Jean Hélion and Katherine Kuh. Also included are holograph and typescript drafts of the catalogue introduction. Many topics besides those relating directly to the Art Institute projects are discussed in the extensive correspondence between Marcel Duchamp and Frank Brookes Hubachek in this series. These include: Duchamp's new wife, Alexina "Teeny" Sattler Matisse, the disposition of art objects held by Elizabeth Humes, Mary Reynolds and others, and various personal matters. Series IV, Photographs, encompasses portrait photos of Mary Reynolds spanning from infancy to old age along with sundry images of Frank Brookes Hubachek, Matthew Givens Reynolds, and an Alexander Calder mobile. Several of the Reynolds portraits are the work of photographer Man Ray, including two signed works.
