ABSTRACT:Papers and photographs relating to the work of Chicago architect Maurice L. Bein.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:Printed papers and black and white photographic prints.
ORIGINATION: Bein, Maurice L., 1897-1978
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:This collection is part of a larger gift that was donated to The Art Institute of Chicago by Bein's family, William A. Bein, Joseph A. Bein, and Barbara Stone.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Maurice L. Bein was born in Russia on September 13, 1897, and grew up in Chicago in a poor immigrant family. He received his art training at Hull House, The Art Institute of Chicago, and at the Armour Institute of Technology. After one year at Armour, Bein passed his architectural board examinations and was granted his license by the State of Illinois in July 1920. He worked in the office of Chicago architects Alschuler and Pridmore before opening his own office and joining the American Institute of Architects.

His small firm he never employed more than two people became known mainly for apartment house and residential hotel designs. Bein's career was rather short, however, for in 1930 he turned from architect to general contractor. In 1941 he moved to California, where he worked both as architect and general contractor, although his relocation was also a move into retirement. Bein died in Los Angeles on March 6, 1978.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
This small collection consists of papers and photographs. Both groups of materials document Bein's professional practice as well as his personal interests. The professional papers and photographs of Bein's buildings provide a solid representation of his designs, while the journal articles and unidentified building photographs suggest his interests and influences.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
SERIES I: PAPERS. This series is in two sections: professional papers and personal papers. Both are arranged chronologically.

SERIES II: PHOTOGRAPHS. This series is divided into two subseries: photographs of buildings received in a presentation binding and unbound photographs of buildings. The bound photographs have been numbered sequentially, removed from the binding, and sorted by type of building: commercial, mixed use, religious and community, and residential. The sequence has been maintained within each type; a few photographs have been moved to group images of the same building together. These building photographs are identified by street address, general location, or name, usually as inscribed on the verso of each image. The original binding is at the end of this category. The unbound photographs are unidentified and are grouped by building type and type of view.
