BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Carter Manny (b. 1918) was born in Michigan City, Indiana. His architectural studies, begun in 1941 at Harvard University, were interrupted by the advent of World War II, and he spent the war years working in aircraft design and manufacturing for the Aircraft Scheduling Unit of the War Production Board. After the war ended, he served a brief apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright, both at Taliesin in Spring Green, Wisconsin, and Taliesin West near Phoenix, Arizona. In 1948, he completed his architectural studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology under the tutelage of Mies van der Rohe.

He found employment at Naess & Murphy (later C.F. Murphy Associates and then Murphy/Jahn), and spent his career there until his retirement in 1984, working on many significant projects including O'Hare International Airport, Daley Center, First National Bank Building, Continental Insurance Building (all in Chicago) and the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building in Washington, D.C.

Concurrently, he was active in community affairs and served on several Chicago commissions. He was involved with the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts from its founding in 1956, and served as Director from 1971-1993. In 1970, he was named to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. He was also involved in the burgeoning Chicago public art scene in the 1970s, specifically with the planning and installations of the Daley Center plaza Picasso sculpture, the First National Bank plaza (now Chase Bank) Chagall mosaic, and the Federal Center plaza Calder stabile. Manny passed away on February 1, 2017 in San Rafael, California.
