BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
John Garrett Thorpe, born 1944, was an Evanston native and later resident of Chicago, Glenview and Oak Park. After receiving his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Thorpe worked briefly for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, out of offices in Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Algiers. Thorpe first became involved in historic preservation in the early 1970s through a partnership with architect Don Kalec (SAIC Professor Emeritus, Historic Preservation and AIADO), formed to oversee the restoration of Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1889 home and studio in Oak Park. The architects, along with a crew of volunteers, painstakingly documented a century of alterations and then, using historic photographs, drawings, written records, physical evidence and interviews, worked to return the Home and Studio to its 1909 state, the last year Wright lived and worked there.

The Home and Studio restoration project became a blueprint for preservation field architects and advocates alike. According to architectural historian Kevin Harrington, Thorpe and Kalec’s master plan The Plan for Restoration and Adaptive Use of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio (1978) “remains the standard of excellence for such work around the world.”

After the founding of his own firm, John Garrett Thorpe & Associates, in Oak Park in 1984, Thorpe consulted on the restoration of over 200 structures, including approximately 60 designed by Wright and 60 by other notable Prairie School architects such as Walter Burley Griffin, Barry Byrne, John Van Bergen, William Drummond, Charles White, George W. Maher, Purcell & Elmslie, Tallmadge & Watson, Spencer & Powers and E. E. Roberts. Thorpe’s work, known for his “sensitive approach” to restoration, received over 40 national, state and local awards including: the National AIA Honor Award, 1987 (for restoration of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio); the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois, Distinguished Illinois Preservationist (Founders' Award), 1992; the LPCI, Richard Driehaus Award, 1999 (for restoration of the Heurtley Residence); and the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust Lifetime Service Award, 2014.

In addition to his practice, Thorpe was heavily engaged in the local architectural and preservation communities as founder, chairman, executive committee or board member for organizations such as the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust (1974-2016), the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy (1989-2016), the Historic Preservation Commission of Oak Park (1986-1992), the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park (1992-2016), Landmarks Illinois (1971-1975) and Chicago Architecture Foundation (1970-1975). He died in Oak Park in 2016.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
John G. Thorpe and his architectural firm, John G. Thorpe & Associates, provided distinguished restoration and preservation design services on buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and other Prairie School architects. This collection includes 33 projects originally designed by Wright and 27 projects by other Prairie School architects, out of the 124 such projects completed over his 46-year career. SERIES I consists of project files and includes smaller sketches and architectural drawings, photographs and negatives, correspondence, historical research, financial documents, calculations, maps, and more. The files are arranged by project and then by document type. Subseries include: MAPS, DRAWINGS, AND CALCULATIONS; PHOTOGRAPHS AND NEGATIVES; PROJECT PAPERS; and MISCELLANY. Project papers include contracts, bid documents, specifications, product information, and related materials. Miscellany covers a range of items, from paint samples to geneological research on former home owners to both historical and contemporary articles written about the project. In some cases, because an effort was made to keep documents together as donated, items may not fall neatly into just one category. For example, a map and photos in a tourist brochure would be in miscellany, while paint samples attached to correspondence would be in project papers. The extent listed in the photographs and negatives subseries refers to sheets of photos, which include anywhere from 1-8 photographs.SERIES II is made up entirely of drawing sets, arranged alphabetically by project. Where copies of original drawings exist, it has been noted in the finding aid. Some of the materials in this collection have been digitized. For further information, please contact the archivist.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
SERIES I: PROJECT FILES. Arranged alphabetically by project title. Each project's papers are further organized by document type: MAPS, DRAWINGS, AND CALCULATIONS; PHOTOGRAPHS AND NEGATIVES; PROJECT PAPERS; and MISCELLANY.
