ABSTRACT:The collection consists primarily of photocopies of both printed materials (1833-2001), chemises and dossiers from the Andre Mellerio Papers (1833-2001) compiled by curators at The Art Institute of Chicago in preparation for the 1994 exhibition and accompanying catalog, Odilon Redon: Prince of Dreams, 1840-1916.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Photocopies and newspaper clippings.
ORIGINATION:The Art Institute of Chicago.
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:These materials were acquired from staff records at The Art Institue of Chicago in 2016.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Odilon Redon Prince of Dreams 1840-1916 was a traveling exhibition organized by The Art Institute of Chicago in 1994. It displayed 180 works by Redon, in virtually every medium in which he worked. The collection is comprised of printed and archival materials compiled by the curators in preparation of the exhibit and the accompanying catalog.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The sources are varied and consist almost entirely of photocopied articles from French newspapers, journals, encyclopedias, catalogs and books from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are also photocopies/transcriptions of Redon-authored materials from the Andre Mellerio Papers. Materials were annotated, indexed and cross-referenced by the curatorial staff. A small proportion of the papers relate specifically to preparation for the 1994 exhibition and to other Art Institute of Chicago acquisitions of Redon literary and artistic work, both before and after the exhibition.Series I, Printed Papers, Redon Research Materials is almost entirely photocopies from publications dating from Redon’s lifetime (1840-1916) including newspapers, books, articles, encyclopedia entries, and exhibition catalogs. Some articles are exhibition reviews written by Redon himself. Included in this series are images and information on subjects that are connected to specific aspects of Redon’s work. Series II is a small collection of papers created by staff at The Art Institute of Chicago, relating to the museum’s acquisition of Redon’s works, preparations for the 1994 exhibition and subsequent correspondence and scholarship. Series III consists of copies of Redon’s correspondence, account books and other writings, including his memoir A Soi-Meme; much of the material in this series is from the Andre Mellerio Papers. Series IV is restricted and relates to the museum’s acquisition of the Mellerio Papers.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
The curatorial team meticulously organized most of the materials into three ring binders and file folders. The arrangement of this collection maintains that organization, relying on binder titles, box titles and file folder titles and arrangement. While processing the papers, the archives staff prepared an inventory listing the binder titles, the sequence of their sections and the number of the moving boxes in which the papers were moved from Druick’s office to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives. This list is included in 14.17.

SERIES I: PRINTED PAPERS: REDON RESEARCH MATERIALS. Divided into five subseries: Newspaper articles; Books, serials and theses; Catalog excerpts; Geographic Research; and Images and subjects.

SERIES II: EXHIBITION-RELATED.

SERIES III: REDON WRITINGS AND RECORDS.

SERIES IV: ART INSTITUTE ACQUISITIONS. This series contains internal documentation that is restricted to the general public. Please contact the Archivist for additional information.
