Abstract | This thesis explores the public and collective practices of the Movimento de Arte Porno [Porn Art Movement] carried out by the artist's collective Gang, created in February 1980 in Rio de Janeiro. The research investigates Gang's artistic practices in connection with the political transformations of the early 1980s in Brazil (from dictatorship to democracy). The thesis presents an exhaustive account of each of Gang's public practices (performances, print publications, graffiti and interventions in the mass media), focusing on how these different tactics paralleled democratization on multiple fronts: the reclaiming of public space, the collapse of hierarchies between media and the incorporation of the body in poetic practice. |
