ABSTRACT:This extensive collection of documents and original papers by and about French artist Odilon Redon was compiled by his biographer and friend André Mellerio.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Holograph papers, typed papers, printed papers, and photocopies.
ORIGINATION: Mellerio, Andre, b. 1862
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The Art Institute purchased the André Mellerio collection from a private dealer in 1991.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
André Mellerio (1862-1943), art critic and friend of artist Odilon Redon (1840 -1916) and his wife Camille Redon, worked closely with Redon while writing numerous articles and several important catalogues on Redon's work. Mellerio's research and publishing projects continued after Redon's death in 1916. The bulk of this collection was assembled by Mellerio during his years of researching and publishing the works of Redon. The sources of this collection were varied, although much of the material originated from Redon, his wife, and son. This collection significantly informed the Art Institute's 1994 exhibition Odilon Redon: Prince of Dreams.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
This collection was assembled by André Mellerio during his years of researching and publishing the works of French artist Odilon Redon (1840-1916). The sources were varied, although much of the material originated from Redon, his wife, and son. The collection includes notes and manuscript drafts for Mellerio's publications on Redon; Redon's studio account book and press clipping book; correspondence with Redon and his family; correspondence with colleagues and scholars; exhibition catalogs and citations of exhibitions and sales; and Mellerio's research notes and bibliography. Much of this collection consists of Mellerio's meticulous transcriptions of Redon's letters and other personal papers, lent to him by Redon or his widow. A second large section is comprised of Mellerio's transcriptions of texts published by other authors, pertinent to his research on Redon.

ORGANIZATION AND ARRANGEMENT:
The papers are divided into sixteen series of related types of materials:

SERIES I: ODILON REDON, PEINTRE, DESSINATEUR ET GRAVEUR (1923). Manuscript drafts, correspondence, notes, proofs and other documents relating to the 1923 publication by Mellerio.

SERIES II: ODILON REDON (1913). Manuscript drafts, correspondence, notes, proofs and other documents relating to the 1913 publication by Mellerio.

SERIES III: ARI REDON CORRESPONDENCE. Mellerio's correspondence with Ari Redon, son of Odilon Redon. Arranged chronologically.

SERIES IV: GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE. Mellerio's general correspondence is arranged alphabetically by correspondent name and then chronologically. Incoming and copies of outgoing correspondence are interfiled. In many instances, a draft of Mellerio's reply was written on the incoming letter. N.B.: Correspondence with Redon, Mme. Camille Redon, and Redon's son Ari are in separate series.

SERIES V: MME. CAMILLE REDON CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence is arranged chronologically. At the end of the series are several folders of Mellerio's notes from interviews with Camille Redon.

SERIES VI: REDON EXHIBITIONS. Exhibition catalogs or citations to exhibitions which included works by Redon are arranged chronologically by date of exhibition.

SERIES VII: MELLERIO'S WRITINGS ON REDON. This series contains Mellerio's drafts, notes and published texts for his works on Redon, with the exclusion of those publications noted in Series I, II, X and XVI (which includes Mellerio's essay "Catalogue d'estampes d'Odilon Redon...Collection de M. André Mellerio" ).

SERIES VIII: RESEARCH NOTES AND BIBLIOGRAPHY. Bibliographic material, including citations and Mellerio's transcriptions of complete texts are arranged chronologically by date of publication, then alphabetically by author or title within each year. Undated sources are placed at end of series, arranged alphabetically by author's name.

SERIES IX: "LES AMIS DE REDON" .

SERIES X: MOUVEMENT IDEALISTE EN PEINTURE. Research materials and publication documents related to Mellerio's book, published in 1895.

SERIES XI: ODILON REDON OBITUARIES. Arranged alphabetically by publication title.

SERIES XII: SALES RECORDS. Catalogs and citations of sales of works by Redon arranged chronologically. Also included are citations to the sales of limited edition books by and about Redon.

SERIES XIII: ODILON REDON CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence between Redon arranged chronologically, other correspondents arranged alphabetically at rear.

SERIES XIV: REDON'S WRITINGS AND MEMORABILIA. Redon's personal papers include his writings, memorabilia, scrapbooks and Mellerio's transcriptions of Redon's account books.

SERIES XV: MELLERIO NON-REDON WRITINGS. Documents relating to Mellerio's writings on non-Redon subjects; includes some miscellaneous personal papers of Mellerio.

SERIES XVI: COLLECTORS/COLLECTIONS. Correspondence, writings, clippings, catalogs, etc., pertaining to collectors or collections of Redon's works are arranged alphabetically by personal or institutional name.

SERIES XVII: CHEMISE INVENTORY. Inventory of papers in chemises as initially received in 1991 by The Art Institute of Chicago.

SERIES XVIII: DOSSIERS. A second, bound set of photocopied documents in the Mellerio collection. In preparation for the 1991 exhibition and accompanying catalog, Odilon Redon: Prince of Dreams, curators at The Art Institute of Chicago reorganized photocopies of Mellerio collection to facilitate their research. This set of photocopies is organized in two categories: "MELLERIO'S PUBLICATIONS," dossiers 1-10; and "ODILON REDON," dossiers 11-13. Both categories are contained in 70 bound volumes. The category "MELLERIO'S PUBLICATIONS" contains the author's drafts, proofs and published works, arranged by order of publication date. The major publications are represented in dossiers 1-6; dossier 7 contains a collection of assorted articles, introductions and reviews published between 1891 and 1935. Dossier 8 contains the bibliographical references and research notes which Mellerio compiled and consulted in the writing. Similarly, dossier 9 contains exhibition references, and dossier 10 contains selected information on Redon, his immediate family and relatives. Whenever possible the above material has been complemented by related documentation and relevant correspondence, etc., resulting in an unfolding publication history. The category "ODILON REDON" contains information indirectly related to Mellerio's publications. Dossier 11 contains information on public and private Redon collections in France and abroad; dossier 12 contains information on the market for Redon's work. Finally, dossier 13 includes selected information on the publishing venture of Vollard and Ari Redon regarding La Tentation de Saint Antoine. For easy comparison of various drafts for the same publication each version has been housed in a single volume. The present designation of versions in alphabetical order does not necessarily imply the correct historical order, but merely a suggested order.
