ORIGINATION: Mies van der Rohe, Ludwig (1886-1969)
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:This collection was a gift of Metropolitan structures, Inc. to the Ryerson and Burnham Archives in 1986.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Metropolitan Structures, Inc., a Chicago-based real estate development, construction, and management company, evolved from Herbert Realty Co., a Chicago firm founded by developer Herbert S. Greenwald. After Greenwald's death in 1959, his attorney Bernard Weissbourd created Metropolitan Structures to continue the projects of Herbert Realty Co. and to develop new projects.

For Greenwald, Bauhaus-émigré architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the 860-880 Lake Shore Drive Apartments, the Commonwealth Promenade Apartments, and Promontory Apartments, all in Chicago. Continuing this tradition Weissbourd commissioned several buildings from Mies: a high-rise apartment building and gas station for the new-town development of Nuns' Island in Montreal; Highfield House (apartment building) and One Charles Center (office building) in Baltimore; and 111 E. Wacker in Chicago, the first office building to be developed using the air rights sold by Illinois Central Industries.

The collection contains five scrapbooks and twelve photographs documenting projects which Metropolitan Structures, Inc had commissioned from architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
