BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
John Vinci was born February 6, 1937, in Chicago, IL. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1960. While a student, Vinci became interested in historic preservation and restoration. Working closely with Crombie Taylor, Richard Nickel and Tim Samuelson, Vinci assisted in several salvage and restoration projects early in his career, including Adler & Sullivan's Garrick (Schiller) Theater during its demolition. Vinci is considered to be one of the earliest preservation advocates in Chicago.

Vinci began his architectural career at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 1960, then moved on to Brenner, Danforth, Rockwell from 1961 to 1969. He opened his own office in Chicago with Lawrence Kenny in 1970, which was renamed the Office of John Vinci in 1978, and then Vinci/Hamp in 1995. The Vinci/Kenny firm was responsible for such notable projects as the salvage of the Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Room and Entrance Arch, both of which were relocated and reconstructed at the Art Institute of Chicago. The Office of John Vinci accomplished numerous restoration projects including Frank Lloyd Wright's Tomek Residence in Riverside, IL, and the Home and Studio in Oak Park, IL, as well as Adler & Sullivan's Charnley Residence and portions of the Auditorium Building. Vinci also served as an instructor at Roosevelt University (1970-71), the Illinois Institute of Technology (1972-90) and the University of Illinois at Chicago (1985).

Along with his professional pursuits in preservation and teaching, Vinci designed a number of new buildings and residential additions in Chicago and its neighboring suburbs. Major projects include the Robert Freeark Residence in Riverside, IL, the Arts Club of Chicago and the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in Chicago. In addition to architectural projects, Vinci is known for his exhibition designs, including many projects for the Art Institute of Chicago. Vinci also renovated the Art Institute of Chicago's main lobby and grand staircase and redesigned the Pre-Columbian Gallery.

A nationally recognized authority on preservation and architecture, Vinci has published a number of books and articles on those topics. He has received many preservation awards for his work on landmark buildings and has served on numerous Chicago and Illinois committees dedicated to preservation and architecture. He was elected to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in 1992. He continues to practice as a principal with Vinci/Hamp Architects, Inc. His diverse career and reputation for excellence can be seen throughout Chicago in some of its most important buildings.
