ABSTRACT:Drawings and papers of the architect and artist Herb Greene, who studied with and later worked for many prominent architects such as Bruce Goff and John Lautner. One of Goff's most prolific and accomplished disciples, Greene has been building and promoting his own unique interpretation of organic architecture for near half a century.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Typescript papers, printed papers, architectural reprographic prints, slides, photocopies and photographs.
ORIGINATION:Greene, Herb.
ACQUISITION INFORMATION:The majority of this collection was donated by Herb Greene in 2001 and 2009 and Robert Alan Bowlby in 2010. Robert Alan Bowlby made additional gifts in 2010.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Herb Greene, born Herb Greenberg on September 13, 1929 in Oneonta, NY, is an architect, painter and author renowned for his unique interpretation of organic architecture and design. Greene's formal education began at Syracuse University, in 1947. Attracted by an article in the March 1948 issue of Architectural Forum mentioning Bruce Goff's appointment at Oklahoma University, Greene soon transferred, quickly distinguishing himself as an exceptional student with diverse architectural and intellectual influences including Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Gertrude Stein, Matta, Gaudi, and Alfred North Whitehead. While studying under Goff and E. Fay Jones at Oklahoma, Greene worked briefly for the Los Angeles architect—and Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice—John Lautner. After graduating in 1952, Greene worked intermittently with Goff and John Krakower, whose Houston firm employed the young architect from 1954 to 1957. While with Krakower, Greene designed the Southwestern Bell Telephone Building (3333 Fannin St., 1958), composed largely of textured concrete blocks reminiscent of Wright's textile block houses in Los Angeles. Other works of this period include the Houston Typewriter Exchange Building (2001 Caroline St., 1956) and the now-demolished Long Point Clinic (7410 Long Point Rd., 1957). Greene's only solo commission while in Houston was the Catherine Lyne Residence (3605 Meriburr Lane, 1957, demolished), its triangular plan selected, according to Greene, "because its dynamism and angularity suited the personality of the client."

In 1958 Greene returned to Oklahoma to teach, where he hoped "to contribute to the imaginative side of Oklahoma University architecture" and to pursue his love of painting and montage. Greene's first significant project after returning to Oklahoma was his own Prairie House (1960-1961), four miles east of Norman, Oklahoma. The home, built on a sparse landscape of straw-colored prairie more than a half mile from any neighboring houses, is elliptical in form—providing strength against storm winds—and clad in myriad overlapping, shingle-like cedar boards, both inside and out. The diversity of materials and ambiguity of forms in the Prairie House are indicative both of Greene's playful nature and his desire to "express meaning through an organic process of cognition." Gaining popular acclaim after its publication in the November 24, 1961 issue of Life magazine (alongside the Joyce Residence), the Prairie House is considered by some to be one of the most coherent embodiments of the type of organic architecture exemplified by Bruce Goff and his followers. Other significant works of this period include the aforementioned Joyce Residence (Snyder, Oklahoma, 1960), the Cunningham Residence (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 1962), and the Lovaas Residence (Lexington, Kentucky, 1968).

In between sporadic commissions in Oklahoma and Kentucky, Greene has taught at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, and practiced in Berkeley, California. Continuing in the tradition Goff, Greene has, over time, diverged from traditional architectural projects and moved more towards speculations and fantasies imagined for a profession "freed from the fetters of current practice and convention." Integration of painting, collage, urban planning, and architectural design is evident in many of Greene's projects, though perhaps most notably through his 1981 book, Building to Last: Architecture as Ongoing Art which features proposals for an "urban armature." Other books by Greene include Mind & Image: an Essay on Art & Architecture (1976) and Painting the Mental Continuum: Perception and Meaning in the Making (2003). Since retiring, Greene has moved to California where he "continues to write, paint and promote his concept for building with artists."
