Description
“An artist's book serialized over one year and published in chapters each month echoing a nineteenth century paradigm in publishing by authors such as Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins… A site-specific intervention into the Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology at the University of Cambridge , 'The Fork's Tale ' is the story of the relationship between collections , collectors and the collected written from the point of view of a nineteenth century Fijian cannibal fork . The cannibal forks… are highly contested artifacts… meant to be material proof of past savagery [though] many are known to have been made specifically for an early tourist trade in native curios and have never touched human flesh… The complexity of these stories… is explored… including the humor involved in the encounter between Fijians and Europeans.” – statement from the artists . Each chapter is a separate signature and includes drawings and a fictional autobiography from the point of view of a cannibal fork ; touches on themes of animism , colonialism , ethnography , anthropology , archeology , and speculative history . Notations are expressed through experimental typography. ; Text by Alana Jelinek , designed by Marit Munzberg .
