Image Notes	This survey exemplifies the planning and data analysis which the city conducted before embarking on urban renewal and slum clearance projects. This area of Chicago's Near West Side was then home to some of the city’s largest Greek and Italian communities, with notable institutions such as Jane Addams' Hull House, St. Ignatius High School, and the Maxwell Street Market (slightly off map). Construction of the Congress Expressway and Circle interchange in the 1950s and the University of Illinois at Chicago in the early 1960s wiped out significant sections of Greektown, most of the Hull House complex, as well as much of the historic Italian neighborhood.
