faculty access

You can book a class visit to the Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection/Flaxman Library Special Collections at any point in the semester, either via email to jfabc@saic.edu, via phone during business hours, 312-899-7486, or in person.

Please start by browsing the digital collection at http://digital-libraries.saic.edu/jfabc, and make your selections of material to view. Under the Resources tab you can also find links to other sites related to artists' publishing.

For email reservation requests please include the following information:

  • your name, department, and course title
  • the exact date and time you would like to come in (allow for 45 - 90 min) or a date range
  • your home/cell phone number
  • the accession numbers of the title(s) requested. All items need to be requested at least two working days in advance; this includes all titles labeled “Restricted Access”.

Due to the ever-increasing volume of visitors and a minimum of staffing we strongly encourage you to make your own selections and can no longer keep records of past request lists.

For the safety of the collection we will have to keep the amount of additional titles that can be pulled while the class is in session to a minimum.

If you feel unsure on how to make your own selection of titles we will be happy to assist you, and can make recommendations based on your syllabus or any other specifications.

Semester hours are generally Monday through Thursday 9 am to 7:30 pm, Friday 9 am to 4 pm, and Saturday noon to 4 pm. Last-minute scheduling requests will be gladly accommodated whenever a time slot is available; however advance notice of two working days is preferred.

Please also consider using the book room for reading events, critique sessions, performances, class discussions or for any other course activities that may benefit from a more public and stimulating setting.

We are looking forward to helping you make this a successful semester for you and your students.
